Bonded fin heat sinks are built by inserting individual fins into precisely machined or extruded grooves in a solid base. The fins are secured using a thermally conductive bonding material, creating a strong thermal path between the heat source, base, and cooling fins.
This construction allows taller, thinner, and more closely spaced fins than many conventional extrusion designs. It is especially useful when the required heat sink is too large, too wide, or too thermally demanding for a practical one-piece extrusion.
The base may be manufactured from aluminum or copper, while the fins can use the same or a different material. This flexibility makes bonded fin construction suitable for large power electronics systems where thermal performance, weight, airflow, cost, and manufacturability must be carefully balanced. Bonded or brazed assemblies commonly use a grooved base with separately manufactured fins, allowing a wider range of base and fin geometries than standard extrusion.
High Fin-to-Base Ratio
Individual fins can be considerably taller than the base thickness, providing a large cooling surface within a relatively compact footprint.
Flexible Fin Density
Fin thickness, spacing, height, and airflow direction can be adjusted to match natural convection, fan cooling, or a defined system air duct.
Large Overall Dimensions
Bonded fin construction is well suited to long or wide heat sinks that would be difficult or uneconomical to manufacture as a single extrusion.
Mixed-Material Designs
Copper bases can be combined with lightweight aluminum fins when improved heat spreading is needed without using an all-copper assembly.
Easy System Integration
Fans, shrouds, heat pipes, vapor chambers, mounting rails, power modules, and protective covers can be integrated into the finished assembly.

CNC Machining

Finishing
